2017 International Division Winners (Male)

TOPS Success Stories > 2017 International Division Winners (Male)

At the 2018 International Recognition Days event in Montréal, Quebec, at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, TOPS honored the 2017 International Division Winners. Division Winners are recognized within divisions which are based on members' starting weights of each year. Winners lost the most weight within their division during the calendar year. A little healthy competition usually provides extra motivation for our members.

I finally got tired of everyone asking how and why I was getting so fat. I made up my mind—I was going to join TOPS and get my life and health back. My TOPS chapter was so helpful from that point on to help keep me on track. The biggest challenge for me now is when I have nothing to do and I'm bored. I find if I stay active and busy, I do not think of food. I also found that staying active in my chapter helps. I became an assistant weight recorder and it has helped me stay aware of my weight. It's easy to be proud of yourself when everyone else is proud of you, but the great thing about TOPS is if you lose, they support you, and if you gain…they still support you. I hope to see you all lighter!

I have had excessive weight gains and losses throughout my life. Keeping my weight off was something that seemed impossible. I started on this journey when my wife decided to go to a TOPS meeting. I did not think about going, but then I changed my mind. Ten months later, I look and feel like the person that was in there all the while. I am grateful for the support from my wife, Carol, and my son, Chris, as well as my TOPS friends. Since reaching my goal, my overall health has improved. I know each day is a gift and whatever challenges are ahead, the skills I have learned will help me Keep Off Pounds Sensibly.

Division 4 & Newfoundland and Labrador King

I first joined TOPS in 2009 to support my wife, Dorothy. I knew it wouldn’t hurt to lose a few pounds before our wedding that May. After I lost the weight, I quit. That was a big mistake. As I got older, I thought more about the importance of being fit and healthy. I became very aware of health issues associated with being obese. In 2013, I went back to TOPS. I realized that there will always be challenges and I had to make smart choices in order to reach my goal and live a healthy life. I reached my goal early last fall and became a KOPS. Now staying within leeway has become my new focus. I plan to pay it forward, to help and encourage others to reach their goal by being an example as I Keep Off Pounds Sensibly!

I don’t remember a time I wasn’t overweight. I would lose weight here and there, but I didn’t have self-control when it came to food. The reason for all the failures in the past is because of one thing: I tried to do it on my own. I needed Christ to help guide me along the way. I am a born again Christian, and as such, Christ is the reason I have been able to get where I am now. I believe he sent me to the TOPS chapter I belong to. They have helped me more than they know. The KOPS in my chapter have been my biggest inspiration. Two of them, Joan Sutherland and Clayton Schwind, helped me tremendously. I praise God for his direct intervention in my life and for TOPS for helping me on my journey!

Division 9

I first joined TOPS in 1993, but stopped going after life got in the way. I rejoined in 2010. As a retired man, I felt that I had the time to invest in myself. After a while, my wife and I decided that bariatric surgery was the best thing for me and I started my journey toward a better life. At 70 years old, I was the second oldest patient the surgeon had ever done this procedure on—but I was motivated! Not only for the benefit of myself, but to be an example to other members of what is possible with dedication and hard work. TOPS helped me look at my situation not as a diet or temporary, but as a permanent lifestyle change. I am taking off pounds sensibly and I believe you can too.

One year ago, if you would have told me where I’d be today, I would not have believed you. But here I am. What I thought was impossible has become possible. I went from being lethargic and not really living life to being excited about every day. Many things made my journey possible, but my TOPS group was one of the most important factors to my success. My parents, Rayne and Nathan Burr, have also motivated me to keep going. I can literally never thank them enough. The weight-loss dream is real! You can achieve the dream with proper motivation, discipline and support—and that is what TOPS is best at—support.

Division 2

My weight-loss journey started in March 2017. My family doctor told me that my high blood pressure was getting higher and I had prediabetes. I also needed a knee surgery, but at my present weight, the surgeon told me that it wouldn’t last. He recommended I lose 100 pounds and come back. Knowing I had to do something, my wife’s friend who had KOPS status invited me to a TOPS meeting. I joined and was given, My Day One. I struggled with the exchange system at first, but as long as I didn’t cheat, the pounds came off. It has now become a way of life for both my wife and me. I had my knee surgery and am no longer prediabetic. My wife has attained her KOPS status, and I hope to be joining her soon!

Starting was the hardest part. Take Off Pounds Sensibly. This is our motto, our mission statement, our battle cry. But I was losing that battle. I had excuses to self-indulge, overeat and exercise anytime other than the present. I had to do something and quick! I remembered my mother had suggested TOPS. Could what worked when I was in my 20s work in my 50s? I got on my phone, did a search for nearby TOPS groups and found a meeting nearby. The group welcomed me with warm smiles and I found how important support groups are for someone who strives to be a normal weight, but has some impulse control issues. Thank you for being such an awesome group.

I have been obese for more than 52 years—and have lost 100 pounds about 10 times only to gain it all back. My highest weight was about 412 pounds with a 60-inch waist. It has been more than a year since I had my gastric bypass procedure, and I’m very healthy now. I work out at the gym six mornings a week and walk between four to five miles every day. I now realize that healthy eating and exercise are so important! Because of my healthy lifestyle, I no longer have diabetes and sleep apnea. I’ve also been able to get rid of nine of my 11 medications. My life is good now. I should have done more to take care of myself many years ago, but it is never too late to start. Thank you to my family, my chapter and to TOPS for all the support given to me on my weight-loss journey.
