10 Ways to Keep Warm This Winter

Just because it’s chilly outside doesn’t mean you should stay bundled up inside all winter. We’ve come up with some tips on how to bring in the heat and keep out the cold.

  1. Move it. Working out in the winter gets the blood pumping and actually makes your skin feel warmer.
  2. Snuggle up. Grab a warm blanket, along with a good book, and give yourself some well-deserved “me” time. Or, unplug entirely and relax by candlelight.
  3. Fire up your oven. Winter is the perfect time for baking. How about making something whole-grain from scratch or cooking dinner as a family. The heat will warm up the house and fill it with wonderful aromas.
  4. End the day with a bath before bedtime. There is nothing quite like getting out of the tub and going straight under the covers.
  5. Sip. Green tea is always a favorite during the cold months and has been linked to lower the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Way to go green!
  6. Hug it out. You know how they say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well, maybe hugging keeps us out of the doctor’s office too—physical contact can boost your immunity, thus helping prevent you from getting sick this winter.
  7. Add some spice. Throw in some extra spices to give your homemade dish some more flavor. Ginger is naturally anti-inflammatory, while the spicy heat present in chilies warms you in and out.
  8. Embrace the season. How about, instead of hibernating, you head out? Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or just getting bundled up to check out the holiday lights, can all help keep the doldrums at bay.
  9. Call a friend. There is nothing like reconnecting to someone you may not have talked with in a while to bring on the warm and fuzzies.
  10. Limit your liquor. Contrary to popular belief, alcohol might make you feel warmer, but it actually decreases your core temperature.
